Grandson

‘What are you doing granddad?’

John lifted his glasses. He motioned for his grandson to sit beside him. He wasn’t sure how to explain the beauty of turning a page, or steering around the words, into images only he could see.

‘Reading a book.’

‘How does it plug in?’

He grinned, the grey in his hair littered with brown. At the grand age of one hundred and fifty, most people lived beyond that. A boring life, when he had seen it all, his choice to stop taking his medication; a good move. Books were his only solace. A place where he didn’t have to download his thoughts to watch.

‘It doesn’t,’ he said. ‘You read the text, and they sort of jump into your mind. You can close your eyes, making your own magical world.’

‘I scanned on my tablet.’

‘Not the same. My Grampy gave this to me; it’s about a group of friends who search for clues. No computers, no virtual classes, just fun.’

Jack smiled as each word wandered across the smooth paper. His granddad was so wise, and the words were way better than anything on the wireless universe. It felt free having only his own thoughts from only a few words.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
