Safe

‘Be safe, little fledgling,’ Clara said, wrapping her hazel wings about her red breast.

Her claws gripped on to the hollow branch , observing his tiny feathers finding the strength to lift himself into the evening sky. The sun shifted over the canopy, glowing through a thick mass of green leaves.

Hiding her eyes, her plumage couldn’t cope with his failure. Days ago, one of his sisters failed to avoid the cat hiding in the bushes. At least it was quick; she didn’t have time to utter a sound before fate stole her youth.

‘Mama! Mama! Mama! I did it, I can fly!’

‘Sweetheart, I am so proud …’ She soared from each brittle bones of the oak tree, and touched down beside her son.

He ruffled his chest, not able to remain still.

‘There are many cats hunting; promise me to watch out for predators. It isn’t her fault. She only wants to feed her cubs, just like I continue to feed you. We respect each other.’

‘Do I have to leave? If it is too dangerous?’

‘You have outgrown the nest, and soon will migrate. Winter is a cruel beast you cannot see. Let your inner guide lead you to a safe passage south.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
