Name Blindness

I have trouble remembering names.

Working in a school, there are many I have to remember. Teachers I perceive as easier because if I cannot recall from a previous meeting, I am able to just say miss or sit and avoid punishment with it. When it is a child, that is more challenging. If they are similar in looks, or sitting in another place, their first name is a mystery.

I can recognise a face, but it is helpful to understand where from.

Conversations with people who recognise me, but I can’t figure out from where I met them, are commonplace. They ask about my children, offer facts a friend would give, yet when they leave, my mind remains blank.

At home, my family understands I might not get their identities right. More often than not, they could get called by the dog’s given name.

I am not sure why I am like this, but it isn’t about being rude and not familiarizing myself with who they are.

  1. Hi Diana I am not saying this is your problem but I couldn’t resist looking up your not remembering names and came up with this. You could look it up.

    Anomic Aphasia/Dysnomia:

    • This condition primarily affects the ability to recall words, names, and numbers.
    • Speech remains fluent, and understanding of language is not impaired.
    • Individuals with anomic aphasia often use circumlocutions (talking around the word) to express the name they can’t remember.
    • They may also be able to recall the name with the help of cues.

  2. Willow beat me to it. Don’t beat yourself up. Some cannot remember faces at all, whereas you can remember some. I don’t know how many tricks out tbere could help you but it might be worth looking into.
