There are Days

Written for https://lifeafter50forwomen.com/category/sunday-poser/

There are days when I am proud of being a citizen of my country. Where we have a diverse culture, and through the medium of hope, understand our differences, but are friends anyway. Where I grew up, and by talking with colleagues, I learnt about different religions and how we are not that different.

For instance, in Christianity, Jesus is the son of God, and in the Muslim faith, he is a prophet.

In recent years, there has been a increase in racism. Not only behind closed doors but out on the streets. It is worrying that people’s beliefs are going backwards, not forwards. On our lamp posts, the British flag is flying at half-mast, and the council isn’t doing anything to take them down.

Not proud then.

My husband’s great-grandfather and grandmother travelled from Germany in the 1900s. Jacob and Sarah possibly moved for religious reasons, but to be honest, I’m not sure. We only found out when my husband did an ancestry test on holiday and found out his mother’s maiden name was German.

They were immigrants too, and their only crime to want a better life.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. I fully agree that world was more tolerant a few years ago but now values are shifting again. We should be more open minded and accept others as equals. Thanks for sharing dear friend

  2. There are times in all of our countries’ histories where we are less or more proud. Most days I am most proud to be Canadian, though.

    Nicely done, Diana.
