Dreaming Wins

‘Not sure how I am going to follow that dream on a bike. I mean, it seems to me I would end up falling off, especially when I go uphill. Probably more like a nightmare with my lungs.’

Clara smiled at her friend; it took all her effort to persuade her to go on this holiday, let alone climb on a bike that was powered by legs. Normally Charlie drove. If her car broke down, she got a taxi to work.

‘This holiday is a dream. Isn’t it? Look, we can take it easy for the first few miles.’

‘Miles! I can’t remember being able to ride a bike-even when I was a kid.’

How could she persuade her friend to take a chance? The only way to the next village was by human power. She put an arm round her friend’s waist and guided her to the bikes.

‘Think of it as handing over a report. When you first open the email, you don’t think you can cope with the workload, but the more you do, the easier it is to see the finish line. Besides, we are strong, independent women.’

‘Not sure I feel strong . . .’

‘You kept me sane all these years. If it wasn’t for you, I would have broken into multiple pieces when Larry left me. Besides, if I remember correctly, there is a brilliant village pub down the road. They do a brilliant cocktail called A Sleep in the Hay.’

Charlie grinned. ‘Go on then, but you’re buying.’
