Beth assumed a gentle apology was a celebration of their love.

When they first met, she thought he was smug. A surprise night out; his gentle words told me differently. He was the calm voice at the end of the night, with words of comfort; she knew he would look after her.

Never be unkind before you go to sleep; he used to say. A reserved apology, even when he was in the right, kept their marriage solid. She learnt to be the same because he shared his kindness.

She touched her wedding ring.
