Christmas Share

1. It’s not yet the end of September, but already shops are displaying Christmas merchandise here in the UK. Do you think this is too early?

Yes, because we are just getting over the Summer holidays, before they are wanting us to spend money for Christmas. Halloween isn’t as big in the UK as it is in America, but I feel like we should have that first before we think about a celebration of Jesus’s Birth in December. It has nothing to do with religion, and more about how much money the shops can get out of the customer.

2.  What is your favourite traditional holiday in your country?

Christmas, because it is a holiday where all families get together. Whether they do so because they are Christian, or because they want to be with loved ones and share a good meal, and presents. I worked in the post office for many years, and I remember a Muslim colleague, who loved Christmas and would be the first person to put up the decorations. In turn, I learnt a lot about her faith, when she would share Samosas on their special day. It is important to see how much we share.

3.  Do you think such celebrations are over commercialised?

Yes, but I think time spent with family is important.

4.  Would you like to introduce a new annual National Holiday?

I would introduce a ”Birthday” holiday. When it is our birthday we should be able to have a day off, so we can enjoy it properly. When I worked at the post office, I couldn’t have the day off because it was our busiest time. Working in a school, I cannot because it is during the term.

I am grateful for spending time with my family at Christmas; whether it is watching my grandchildren open their presents, or going ”Santa” shopping (he is busy at that time of year), or eating a turkey dinner with multiple vegetables, and puddings we wouldn’t normally allow ourselves.
