Word of the Day – Impetuous
Fandango – lean
After weeks at sea my waist was as lean as a a flag pole. Her dress almost twice her size. An impetuous act out to sea, and she has no idea whether to stay. Taking a small piece of ribbon she wraps it around her tiny waist.
Mary, or that is what she wants me to call her, frets over my predicament like a mother. Only ten years older, or that is what I assume. When she tastes the familiar fresh fish, cooking in herbs she remembers her mother’s spells.
Her stomach growls. The aroma leads her like a fish to a wriggling worm. Charles, Mary, and three others – two men, and a young woman – sit around a small table. They welcome Bethany with smiles and move along so she can sit down.
She barely notices the company, but as they say a prayer, she puts her fork down. Religion has never been her strength, but they saved her life. Respect, for others around you, will never set you wrong. Funnily enough, her father’s words carry on the air like a forgotten lullaby.
She gulps down food, water, more food, and when she finally stops, feel their eyes upon her. ‘I’m sorry. I haven’t eaten in a while.’ she says, with a mouthful of fish.
‘You’re hungry, how long have you been at sea?’ Charles asks.
‘Weeks, I’m trying to find my . . .’ she stops in time, a pirate father has no place round this table. ‘I’m trying to find my father, he is an . . . explorer.’
Pirates are like a rusty relic, everyone wants to talk about them, but nobody wants to go anywhere near. Mostly they are misunderstood, but there are pirates who care nothing for their victims. Bethany’s worries over her rescuers grew like the beanstalk.
‘That’s exciting,’ the young woman says.
She is about my age, but maybe a little older. I’m not sure now if they are a family, or a group of like minded people. I’ve heard of missionaries, but never seen them in person.
‘It can be, but I lost my way.’
‘Do you know where your father is?’ Charles asks.
‘His last position was down by the Galapagos Islands, but I may have drifted too far to find him.’
‘When we hit land, you can perhaps find passage. For now you are safe.’ Mary says.
‘Aren’t you worried about pirates?’ Bethany says.
Charles blinks, and almost gathers his family around him. ‘We are a small crew with nothing to steal. I can assure you, we are safe here.’
