When I Grow Up

For #flashbackfriday

Green, yellow, with tiny black dots invisible to the eye, and each little particle of this creature infused with the lens. She had never been afraid of bugs, and wasn’t going to start being squeamish now.

After all, when she grew up she was going to be a surgeon. Be part of a world beating team of doctors, but she had to start somewhere. The tiny little joints, working in unison with each other to produce a perfect little insect.

Dreams, she could be anything she wanted to be.

For now she wanted to study this beautiful bug, with its intricate limbs. Blue, green (such a hue of jade, like her mother’s favourite necklace) It was only fake jewellery, but that didn’t matter.

One day she would buy her mum the real jewel, and take her to New York, where she could shop for the fanciest of clothes. She worked as a cleaner in the morning, and answered phones in the afternoon, so she could fit in at school.

It wasn’t easy to fit in at school though, because every time she answered a question, the others would call her names. She felt so out of place, yet when she was with these bugs their hurtful words didn’t matter.

They could try and put her down, but not today. Today her bug would keep her company. One day she would be a surgeon and one day their cruel words wouldn’t matter.

One day she would be a surgeon and she would visit New York with her mum.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
