For E.M. – Champagne

Today’s Random Word is: champagne

‘I don’t like champagne,’ she said, as she was handed a glass.

It wasn’t true, she loved champagne, any drink would have done a few years ago. Now one sip would send her back down the raging rapids of self doubt. This year she wanted to see the new year in with a glass of diet coke.

‘Are you sure?’

‘Yes, I’ve got a drink here,’ she said.

The new year and 2022 was fast approaching. She wasn’t sure what to expect, but to see in the year sober was something to be proud of. Six months ago, that champagne bottle would have been empty in seconds. Now, she had come too far to turn back now.

‘Three, two, one . . . happy new year!’

She wasn’t sure what type of new year would follow, but she would be sober.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
