Rain, Rain, Glorious Rain

This is my first time in taking part in Song Lyric Sunday. Living in England, rain is part of my culture. Our weather mainly consists of the stuff. Even in summer, we still have rain.

Jim Adams has given the prompt for Song Lyric Sunday ”Rain”. It immediately made me think about my favourite musical of all time. It tells the story of an actor in silent movies, who moves into ”talkies”. He works with another actress, but her voice is so bad, her talking voice and singing voice has to be dubbed. Kathy Sheldon (Debbie Reynolds) takes Lina Lamont’s (Jean Hagen) place, both romantically and as the singing voice. When Lina Lamont finds out she is blackmailed to keep being the voice, while she takes all the fame. It doesn’t end well with Lina, who gets found out in the end.

I am a big fan of Gene Kelly and have watched all his films. As a child I loved dancing. I can’t sing, but I do appreciate great singing. His other films are Me and my Gal, Anchors Away, On the Town, An American in Paris, The Three Musketeers. In Anchors away he was lucky enough to dance with Mickey Mouse. He also danced on roller skates, which is not only clever, but unique for the time.

His last film was Xanadu, his co star Olivia Newton John.

My favourite will always be singing in the rain, and another great duo remade the ”Singing in the Rain” scene. Morecambe and Wise, the best comedy act of all time. They were also ahead of the seventies, and very much like Ant and Dec are today a regular part of television.

I’m singing in the rain,

Just singing in the rain,

I’ve a glorious feeling,

I’m Happy Again.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
