Technical

Is technological advancement a net positive or a net negative?

I would say it is a bit of both.

You can say that without the technology we have today, we wouldn’t be able to keep in contact with family and friends when they don’t live within driving distance. I am old enough to remember having change in my pocket for the telephone box down the road. If we were going to be later than expected, we would have to ring our parents to let them know.

Now every child has a mobile phone. Most of them are still in primary school, which is frightening to say the least. My son didn’t have a mobile until he started secondary school. Even then it was a ”brick”. Texting and calling only. Now children have a mini computer in their pocket. Not only does is it dangerous if they were mugged, but they have access to social media from a young age.

In school, they cannot be parted from their mobiles, and even though they are banned in the classroom, they are easily accessible. Students will keep them in their pockets. Yes, they are great for calling their parents, but mobiles can do too much in my opinion.

We are living in a technological age, where we rely on our technology. Most people have a computer, and even most bills can be paperless. We are saving the planet, using less paper, but at what cost?

I enjoy working on my blog, and finding myself go on social media less and less. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram is checked, but this is a more productive use of my time. I am writing something, even if it is procrastinating most of the time. My novel doesn’t edit itself unfortunately.

If we lost technology tomorrow, none of us would be able to cope at first, but we would get used to it. There were no computers when I was young, but we survived. There are some bonuses to technology. As a writer, it is easy to research something for your book, and be in contact with other writers.

Technology today, will not be the technology of the future. Science is always evolving, and perhaps we will be able to time travel, or virtual games. Who knows, but we need to be careful and not let it rule our lives.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
