The salacious sea swerved around the little boat, surrounding it in a gentle embrace. Sun basked clouds spread their wings as if in flight. Today was a great day. To return home, surprise his wife, Sara. How much had his boy, James grown? The last time he saw him, a baby in his mother’s arms. Now, five years old, would he even recognise a father, who had only seen his picture in his wallet.
Drawing closer to the shore, the anchor slowly lowered, he surveyed his home. A little lighthouse, at the edge of nowhere. It’s where he dreamed to be, but now the quiet unsettled him.
He wasn’t the same man. The torture – his heart was split in two. Dreams, on his journey to the mainland, caused his sleep to be disturbed, in such an awful way. Maybe, when he was home they would stop.
It was then he saw her – fiery red hair, tied in a ponytail, with a young boy by her side. He held on to her hand, as Sarah pointed to his little boat. ‘It’s Daddy!’ she shouted against the wind. ‘It’s Daddy!’
At first he didn’t move, but as Tom outstretched his arms, and a push from his mummy, James finally ran towards his father.
