Starry, Starry Night

For Eugis Weekly Prompt – Starry Nights – May 3, 2022

Starry night, the perfect night to sail into the deep blue.

Being a pirate wasn’t for everybody, but for Sam it was all he ever knew. He never knew his mother. His father showed him how to survive – to use the stars as a guide to home.

As he lowered his father into the ocean (gently and with respect) Sam silently spoke a prayer. All souls needed a resting place, and his father was no different. A pirate’s life wasn’t an easy life, but there was love shown to a boy, who always favoured his mother in ways.

Now, a diary he found at the bottom of his treasure chest, revealed there was more to his mother than met his eye-patched stare in the mirror. They loved each other, true love, but she was willing to make the sacrifice of her own son.

She feared what would happen to a child, not born into wedlock. It was safer for him to be a pirate, than snatched from her womb before he had a chance to live.

”I’m sorry I had to let you go, but it was for the best.’ She wrote with such love, and Sam wanted to meet her. Let her know it was the right decision leaving him to be brought up by the sea.

”Starry, starry night,’ he thought to himself, as he steered his ship home.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
