‘Miss, why don’t you want to play rounders with the three witches?’
‘You need to ask questions pertinent to the subject,’ Miss Steele said, pushing her glasses to the end of her nose.
‘Don’t you know the answer Miss then?’
Miss Steele, her silver hair tied in a tight bun, tried not to laugh. It was true, he did ask a question about Macbeth, and she was curious to the answer. This time she wanted to know the punchline.
‘Okay Stella . . . Why don’t you want to play rounders with the three witches?’
A deep breath in, Stella stood up. ‘Because . . . they say foul is fair and fair is foul!’
‘It is indeed,’ Miss Steele said, thinking that next lesson she would get the students to make up some more jokes. Whatever helped them to learn. Sometimes it was better to find other ways to remember. ‘For next lesson can you think of some more jokes, in fact, that’s the homework for next week.’
