Pageboy

‘I don’t want to be a page boy!’ James said.

‘Why not?’ his mum asked, as her little boy stuck his nose out of his book.

‘I don’t want to wear short trousers. My friend Mike, he was a pageboy and he had to wear shorts, a shirt and some silly bow tie. Someone took a photograph on their phone and he was made fun of for weeks in his own Tic-Toc video.’

‘How about you walk me down the aisle,’ his mum said. ‘You can wear whatever you like, as long as you do me this honour.’

James narrowed his eyes, and looked at the album in his mum’s hands. They were all wearing smart shoes, and grown up suits. He barely remembered his dad, but Mum’s new boyfriend was kind.

He even brought him a set of Frozen Lego for his birthday.

‘What is my new daddy wearing?’

‘He is wearing this suit,’ she said.

‘Okay, but can I wear it in pink,’ James said.

‘Of course you can,’ his mum said, giving him a hug.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
