Rainbow

The word of today, from https://fivedotoh.com/2022/07/10/fowc-with-fandango-sample/

‘Not another sample,’ James said.

Tracy spread out all the little paint swatches on the kitchen table. She couldn’t choose any colour for the new bedroom. It was the biggest decision she needed to make.

Not pink, not blue, her baby needed a neutral colour – but what. None of these matched the colour scheme in her head. She patted her stomach, and wondered what shade her little girl would choose.

‘We need to do this right,’ Tracy said. ‘I want my little girl to grow up to whatever she wants to be. ‘I always wanted to be a doctor, but the only jobs available to girls in the eighties were working in an office or a shop.’

‘It’s different now, back then there was barely any choice, now she can be whatever she wants to be.’

‘I have an idea,’ Tracy picked up the small tubs of paint from the table, and rushed into the nursery.

They had built the cot together, and the furniture was at the back of the room.

At the far end of the wall, she opened up one of the tubs; red, yellow, pink, green, orange and purple and blue.

A rainbow of colours.

Against a blue and white background. Clouds, sky and a beautiful rainbow, that’s what here daughter would wake up to. She could be whatever she wanted to be, and follow any dream.

In a few weeks she would give birth to her daughter, and she would grow up in a world full of love. If she wanted to be a doctor, or a scientist, or even fly to the moon, she would be given the chance to fly.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
