‘Sorry love, we’re closed,’ Betty said.
‘All I want is a pint of milk.’
Betty smiled, another minute wouldn’t harm.
She watched as the young woman took a pint of milk from the fridge. She scanned her card, but it wasn’t approved. Rifling through her purse, she tried to get enough coins to pay, but didn’t have enough.
‘Don’t worry,’ she said. ‘take the milk anyway, it will go out of date in a couple of days time.’ She moved from the counter to the fridge. There were many things she would have to throw out, and this woman looked like she needed a friend.
‘In fact, you can have these too, I was going to throw them in the bin. Don’t worry you don’t owe me anything.’
‘Are you sure?’
‘I’m sure, and if you come at the same time tomorrow, there might be something else.’
Masie watched as she left the shop with more than a few bargains, but she understood what it was to go without. There were many others in her situation, and everything was getting tougher. Today was her chance to give back, to those people who helped her.
