He Never Told Me

She was confused when she opened the letter addressed to her recently deceased father and what she found inside was something of a shock. She always asked about her Mum but was told she died while giving birth to her. There was a photo, in a silver frame, by her bed.

‘Dear Steve, I have asked you before, but you have said no. Now I am begging you to let me into our daughter’s life again. I am clean, I promise you. All I want is to spend time in my girl’s life. It doesn’t have to be as her Mum, I realise I don’t have the right to be that.’

The letter discarded; she wasn’t sure what she could do with this new information. Why would he lie to her? Did that mean everything she knew in life wasn’t the real thing.

‘You okay honey.’

‘Yes, it’s the shock Aunty, I thought Mum wasn’t alive all this time, now she is out there somewhere. Did he ever let her into my life?’

‘I need you to sit down.’

‘Do you know who she is?’

‘The thing is . . . ‘

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
