Befriended

Written for https://reinventionsreena.wordpress.com/2018/06/21/reenas-exploration-challenge-week-42/. The Chicken Shop Scam is real. Vulnerable young adults think they are befriended, brought a meal, then to pay back the money owed they have to transfer a package, which then goes missing. On You tube, it is worth watching. It gave me inspiration for my new work in progress.

Through the looking glass, like Alice, the world now a mixture of black and white.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do now – my life spent, searching for clues, finding a reason to release the feelings of fear. Richard, the man I trusted, well not trusted, that’s the wrong thing to say. I never thought he was the person responsible for that first meal paid for and the debt that followed.

The Chicken Shop Scam, a free meal, a unsuspecting victim, now in debt. A job, that’s all they have to do. Just deliver this package – they understand what they are asked to do, yet a favour, for a favour. Going missing, the package becomes another one, more expensive this time.

That’s how my brother got reeled in, the reason for Graham losing his life.

Now, it’s over, and I have to live another life.

Today, we are going to see some guide dogs, a four legged companion, who will allow me to be Sarah again. It’s strange, there is a name, Merlin, a magical creature giving me my independence back.

Mike, the only person I can take with me.

A friend, perhaps more – would Graham approve – I think he would. I trust him, more than that, he trusts me. What we both went through together, that moment when I thought they murdered him.

‘Sarah, you ready?’

‘Yes, I’m ready to be me again,’ I say, taking his arm.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
