Grumpy

Today’s word prompt from https://wordofthedaychallenge.wordpress.com/tag/word-of-the-day/

‘Grumpy, why is your head so shiny?’ Theresa asked, taking hold of his hand.

Walking to the park, she often wondered why he had no hair. Did he lose it in a fight? Or was it, the tooth fairy. She did take teeth, maybe, just maybe she took hair too.

He laughed, getting down to her level. ‘Well, it’s a long story.’

‘I really want to know grumpy. I mean? Will I have no hair too? Will I go bold?’

‘No love, you won’t be bald, I just shaved it off one day, and it never grew back.’

‘You’re funny, Mummy said you were getting old, and you pulled your hair out cause she was always naughty.’

‘That too love, do you want to go to the park?’

‘Yes please, and can I have an ice-cream?’

She loved Grumpy, that’s what she called him anyway. When she got picked up from nursery, they always had an ice-cream, or a slushy, even when it was cold. A trip to the park, watching television, there was always something to laugh at.

Grumpy, the greatest granddad in the world.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
