Sparkling

I stand at the altar, my exhausting climb to this deserted cave forgotten. Each glossy step’s glossary covering sparkling behind me. Weird, my past existence. A blur of images swirl beneath the pools of still water.

Is this what it is like to drift into a constant sleep? All my worries linger before sinking to the bottom. Money, job, and insignificant fears merge into an air of nothingness.

‘Is this heaven?’ I ask.

‘It is the final layer.’

If this is God, it has no shape; no likeness to anything I have come across. One minute, I catch a glimpse of Dad, the next Mum and the baby I never got to hold.

‘What is that?’ A question, without an answer, or so I think.

‘With each life, a lesson is taught.’

‘Did I learn mine?’

A light shining in front of me, and I view myself, heavily pregnant, before the fall. Only, this time, there are no tears, just a happy family, and a child in my arms.

A proud Mum.

‘What don’t you see?’

‘Shelly; what happened to her?’

We adopted a little girl when our dreams of having children fell against a rotting tree. I mournfully watch my daughter lose hope in the care home. Nobody could save her. Lost to drugs. Instead of finding love, she ended up lying in a street, with nothing but death to wish for.

I smile as he hands me my wings.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
