Vacant Dreams

Hidden behind vacant dreams, Sophie permitted her fears to drift into the broken branches. As the stars parted, a different world kept shining through the dark. Free at last. Nobody to tell her what to do.

She let the cool water to wander over her fingers.

‘I refuse to wake up,’ she said. ‘To a similar day like yesterday.’

‘How do you make it better?’

She turned to face the voice, but there was nothing there.

‘There are so many outcomes I cannot control. It scares me. I want to be there for everyone, but struggling to find time for me.’

It was an honesty she couldn’t share with her loved ones; although she was partly to blame. Even when she was alone, her thoughts weren’t at rest. It was as though fear squeezed her heart into something she didn’t desire any part in.

‘That’s okay. See this stream. How each drop on their own isn’t strong. Yet together they can keep a boat from sinking.’

She smiled; the familiar tone when she was small. The person who stopped the monsters in her wardrobe, or read her a story before she went to sleep. He protected her, just as she vowed she would be there for her own children.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
