They walked out of the darkness, bathed in light. Charley wasn’t sure what it was, but understood it wasn’t a dream. She stepped forward, hoping to see her father. They said this would happen, but she wasn’t sure she believed in the afterlife; there was no sign.
‘Mum, what are you looking at?’
‘They’ve come for me,’ she said.
‘Who?’
Charley shrugged her shoulders and gripped her daughter’s smooth fingers.
The bodies were more defined as one person stepped into the room. His smile washed the room of any shadows. The same broad cheeks wandered into a familiar grin. ‘Dad?’
‘Half pint, don’t be afraid.’
‘I’m not,’ she said, holding his hand.
