A New Beginning

Jacketless, I sit, holding sand in my palm, letting it drift through my fingers.

What have I found out so far? That the person I was supposed to trust all the way through my investigation, has now been deemed a liar. Someone, who for the sake of power and privilege, took something more than my sight from me.

Now, completely in the dark, I have to make a new canvass. Like a painter, starting with nothing but white, and covering it with colours. So vibrant, I can start again. The sand is soft between my fingers. Crashing against my face, the air is welcomes me to a new beginning.

‘What are you thinking Sarah?’ Mike asks me.

‘I’m not sure, fresh start maybe.’

‘When do you go back to London?’

‘That’s just it, I’m not sure I want to go back. I know it was just to catch those responsible for Graham, my brother, but now. There is something more to me being here.’

‘We will only ever be a local newspaper, someone with your talents should be out in the world.’

‘That’s just it, I have been. Since I was thirteen, looking for the next adventure, not taking any time to stand still. I’ve enjoyed being here, even my food reviews. St Ives is home, and I don’t want to leave.’ I lift my face to his unique aroma. I’m not ready to start anything new, but I am ready for friendship. ‘I am going to get a guide dog, I’ve looked into the breeds, and was thinking about a German Shepard. I’ve got a meeting tomorrow. Would you go with me?’

‘Yes, it would help with getting around, and if you want it, we have a food critic needed on our team. Jodie has decided to be a full-time mum.’

My answer is easier than I expected it to be. ‘Yes, I would love to.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
