Hermione in Training

Words, indented on a page, full of knowledge, and the humiliation paled into nothingness. She was like a sponge, imprinting all their joy, into her mind. One day, her dream to be a doctor would come true. It didn’t matter about the name calling, or even the pushing in the corridor.

Sat in full classrooms, drowning out the constant noise was difficult, but she could sit there and grasp every bit of knowledge. If they didn’t want to learn she did. One day she could perform a procedure that could save lives.

Sometimes, the teachers only taught her what she knew already. That didn’t matter, knowledge and learning gave her power to control life around her.

Friends, who needed friends.

In truth she did. Even Hermione had Ron and Harry. As she closed the book, someone stood over her. She was taller, by a few inches, and the naughtiest girl in class. Normally she left her alone, but today, there was going to be yet another humiliation.

‘Your name is Hermione right?’ Roberta asked.

‘Yes, please leave me alone.’

‘Like in the Harry Potter books.’

She waited for the laughter, but there was none.

‘I really want to learn to read, but it’s too noisy in the classroom, and you’re the clever kid. I mean the teachers are okay, but I don’t want to look bad in front of my mates.’

Hermione smiled. ‘Course I can.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
